State of the Union – July 4 weekend, 2022

Today I found myself for the first time imagining the US splitting apart, and Hawaii seceding from the US and joining a Pacifica federation/nation comprised of, say, the states of California, Oregon, Washington and the current American territories in the Pacific (Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Marianas – CNMI). I have never in my entire 68 years of life considered this until now. California, if it was a nation, would be the world’s 5th largest economy (ahead of India and Germany), and it would be wise for a small island like Hawaii to join some sort of nation or federation with more resources. It was listening to this video talk, wherein the usually quite measured and level headed historian Heather Cox Richardson declares we are now in a “Constitutional crisis”, that prompted my reverie. Getting ahead of ourselves here, I know, but just sayin’…
